Assessment

Parents and carers' guide to personalised assessments

Assessment plays a fundamental part in supporting children's progress. It is a key part of the teaching and learning process. If we don't check how well children are doing, we can't provide them with the appropriate guidance, challenge or support to improve. Therefore, teaching staff are almost constantly assessing children - from how they build towers in Nursery to how they respond to multi-step problems in Year 6 and everything in between. We involve children in their own assessment activities so that they are aware of what their next steps are.

We use assessment to

  • support individual children on an ongoing, day-to-day basis
  • identify, capture and reflect on each child's progress over time

Children are regularly given feedback on what they need to do to improve. We help them understand where they are in their learning, what to do next and how to talk about their learning.

The majority of feedback provided to children is verbal, in-the-moment feedback that helps them solve the specific problem they are working on.

We also use the Hwb personalised assessments twice per year to help teachers and children understand how a learner’s reading and numeracy skills are developing and what the next steps should be. There is a parents' guide to the personalised assessments at the top of this page.
